There is nothing quite like the frustration of waking up on a chilly morning, turning on the shower, and realising your radiators are stone cold. You head to the airing cupboard or the kitchen, look at the gauge on your boiler, and see the needle sitting at zero.
At MJS Appliance & Boiler Repairs, low boiler pressure is one of the most frequent call-outs we receive. While it is a common headache, it is usually your boiler’s way of protecting itself from further damage.
If you find yourself constantly topped up your system, here are the five most common reasons why your boiler pressure is dropping.
1. A Leak in the Central Heating System
The most obvious culprit is also the most common. Your heating system is a “sealed” loop; if water escapes anywhere, the pressure will drop.
Where to look: Check around the valves on your radiators, the joins in visible pipework, and underneath the boiler itself.
The “Hidden” Leak: Sometimes, a leak can be tiny, just a slow drip under the floorboards or inside a wall. Even a small damp patch on a ceiling can be a tell-tale sign that your pressure loss has a physical cause.
2. Bleeding Your Radiators
Have you recently bled your radiators to get rid of cold spots at the top? If so, you have intentionally released air from the system. Because air takes up space, removing it creates a “void” that causes the pressure gauge to dip.
The Fix: This is perfectly normal. Simply use your boiler’s filling loop to top the pressure back up to the recommended level (usually between 1 and 1.5 bar).
3. A Faulty Expansion Vessel
Inside your boiler is a small tank called an expansion vessel. Its job is to manage the extra volume of water created when the system heats up. If the internal rubber diaphragm fails or loses its air charge, the pressure will fluctuate wildly.
The Symptom: You might notice the pressure shoots up very high when the heating is on, only to plummet to zero once it cools down.
The Fix: This requires a Gas Safe registered engineer. At MJS, we can often “re-charge” the vessel, but if the diaphragm is perished, the part will need replacing.
4. A Leaking Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)
The Pressure Relief Valve is a safety feature designed to release water if the pressure gets too high (usually over 3 bar). If this valve becomes faulty or gets a bit of grit stuck in it, it may start “passing” water even when it shouldn’t.
How to check: Look at the small copper pipe that leads to the outside of your house (the discharge pipe). If it is dripping or has signs of water staining, your PRV is likely the issue.
5. Corroded Radiators
Over time, the water inside your heating system reacts with the metal of your radiators, creating a “sludge” known as magnetite. This corrosion can eventually cause tiny “pinhole” leaks.
These leaks are often so small that the water evaporates before it even hits the floor, making them incredibly difficult to spot. If your system is old and you haven’t had a Power Flush in a few years, internal corrosion could be the silent pressure thief.
